Wrestling is one of the most demanding and rewarding sports an athlete can pursue. It teaches discipline, accountability, resilience, and self-belief. Yet for many kids and families, participation isn’t limited by interest or effort — it’s limited by access.

That reality is what led to the creation of The On the Mat Foundation.

Why the Foundation Exists

The On the Mat Foundation was formed to expand year-round, affordable access to elite wrestling training and to support the long-term growth of the sport through inclusive, community-based solutions.

The Foundation’s mission is rooted in accessibility and inclusion — the belief that anyone can wrestle and deserves the opportunity to learn the sport, regardless of background, financial situation, or circumstance. Wrestling should be a place where kids feel welcomed, supported, and given the chance to grow both on and off the mat.

Founded in collaboration with the MAT CLASH Wrestling Club, The On the Mat Foundation operates as a separate nonprofit organization with its own mission, governance, and long-term vision focused on access, opportunity, and sustainability.

What We’re Focused On Today

At this early stage, the Foundation is intentionally focused on building a strong and responsible foundation. Current priorities include:

  • Increasing awareness around access and inclusion gaps in youth wrestling
  • Supporting consistent, high-quality training opportunities that are affordable and welcoming
  • Collaborating with coaches, clubs, schools, and community leaders
  • Establishing sound operational, governance, and program frameworks

The Foundation has been formally created, with 501(c)(3) status pending. Donations are not being accepted at this time. Right now, the focus is on listening, planning, and building with purpose.

Our Long-Term Vision

The long-term goals of The On the Mat Foundation are ambitious, but deeply rooted in community needs and real-world barriers.

1. Expanding Access to Training

The Foundation aims to help ensure that wrestling training is available year-round and accessible to athletes who want to learn, regardless of financial limitations.

2. Transportation and Accessibility Support

One of the Foundation’s key long-term goals is to develop transportation options across multiple locations within the city, helping remove one of the biggest barriers families face. By creating reliable ways for kids to get to the gym, the Foundation hopes to open the door for more athletes to participate consistently.

3. Scholarship and Financial Assistance Programs

As resources grow, the Foundation plans to support scholarships and reduced-cost opportunities for families who need assistance, ensuring cost does not prevent participation.

4. Community and Belonging

Beyond competition, wrestling has the power to give kids a place to belong. The Foundation seeks to create environments where athletes can be part of something bigger than themselves — learning discipline, accountability, teamwork, and leadership.

5. Character and Faith-Based Leadership

The Foundation also values the role of character and faith in youth development. Long-term programming will emphasize positive mentorship, strong values, and opportunities for athletes to grow spiritually alongside their athletic development.

6. A Permanent Training Facility

A future goal of The On the Mat Foundation is the development of a permanent, multi-use wrestling training facility that serves as a year-round resource for athletes, coaches, and the broader community.

Moving Forward

The On the Mat Foundation is still early in its journey, but its direction is clear. By prioritizing access, inclusion, community, and faith-based leadership, the Foundation aims to help ensure that wrestling remains a sport where opportunity is shaped by effort and commitment — not limited by circumstance.

As the Foundation continues to grow, updates will be shared as programs develop and milestones are reached.
