And eventually in rural areas across the country.

Across the United States, millions of children and families struggle to make ends meet. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the national poverty rate consistently hovers around 11–13%, with many more living just above that threshold and still facing financial hardship. For families earning less than $40,000 per year, costs associated with children’s activities — sports dues, gear, travel, and time off work — often become barriers rather than opportunities.

In essence, the same systems that are meant to provide growth experiences for young people can inadvertently exclude many of the very families who could benefit most from them.

Poverty in the Chattanooga Area

In the Chattanooga metropolitan area, the impact of poverty is equally significant.

  • Approximately one in five children in Hamilton County lives in poverty.
  • Many households struggle with basic needs — food security, transportation, clothing, and access to enriching activities.

That means thousands of kids in our own backyard may have the interest, talent, and drive to participate in sports like wrestling, but lack the financial means to do so.

Why It Matters

We talk about growing the sport of wrestling — but true growth isn’t about more noise or more facilities.

True growth starts with access.

When families can’t afford:

  • Club dues
  • Travel expenses
  • Wrestling gear
  • Transportation
  • Even school supplies

…kids are left on the sidelines before they ever get started.

This isn’t just about athletics. This is about belonging, mentorship, life skills, discipline, confidence, and community. It’s about ensuring that children from all socioeconomic backgrounds get the same chance to grow, compete, and thrive.

The Impact We Can Make Together

The On The Mat Foundation exists to close this gap — not by lowering standards, but by removing barriers.

With the right support, we can help ensure:

  • Wrestling programs operate at little to no cost for families
  • Academic tutoring and mentorship are readily available
  • Food, clothing, and essentials are accessible for kids in need
  • Travel and camp opportunities are inclusive, not exclusive

When we invest in access, we invest in:

  • Stronger youth
  • Stronger families
  • Stronger communities

The Call to Community

The challenges are real — both nationally and right here in Chattanooga — but they are not insurmountable. With the right partnerships, supporters, and community champions, we can create opportunities that reach deeper than a sport: we can help give every child a chance to belong, compete, and grow.
