Starting wrestling is exciting, and the gear questions can feel like a lot. Does your child need a singlet right away? Which shoes should you buy? What can wait?
The short answer: ask the coach before shopping, and start with the basics. For a first practice, your child needs workout clothes, wrestling shoes, and water. A full gear bag can wait until they’ve had a chance to try the sport.
The first-practice essentials
At the MAT CLASH Training Center, families are asked to bring workout clothes, wrestling shoes, and water. Other clubs may have different instructions, so check with your child’s coach before practice.
- Workout clothes: Choose comfortable athletic clothing that lets your child move freely. Ask the coach whether the practice has any clothing guidelines.
- Wrestling shoes: Bring a clean pair for the mat. Confirm the shoe requirements and sizing before buying.
- Water: Pack a water bottle your child can keep nearby and recognize.
That is a good beginner checklist. You don’t need to buy every item that appears in a wrestling gear guide before your child has attended practice.
A note for Chattanooga families
The MAT CLASH Training Center, supported by The On the Mat Foundation, offers free wrestling training at East Ridge High School. There are no Training Center registration, training-cycle, or drop-in fees, and donations are never required to participate. A current athletic membership and completed waiver are required; membership and event costs are separate. If those or gear expenses are a barrier, families can talk with the coaches about available support.

What is a wrestling singlet, and when does your child need one?
A singlet is a close-fitting, one-piece uniform commonly worn for wrestling competitions. It’s one of the most recognizable pieces of beginner wrestling gear, but it usually isn’t needed for a first practice. Some beginner programs use athletic clothes during practice and address competition uniforms later.

Before ordering a youth wrestling singlet, ask the coach:
- Does the team provide or loan a competition uniform?
- What uniform styles and colors does the team or event allow?
- When will your child need it?
- Which size chart should you use?
Competition requirements can vary by team, age group, and event. Don’t assume every singlet or alternative uniform will be accepted without checking.
Individual gear availability can change, so check the MAT CLASH store for what’s currently in stock. Singlets and competition gear are also available through custom team gear orders and team stores. Ask your coach whether the team is arranging an order before buying anything.
Fight shorts and T-shirts: useful, but check the rules
Some wrestlers wear fight shorts and a T-shirt for practice if their coach allows them. They can be a comfortable option for training, but practice clothing and competition uniforms aren’t automatically interchangeable. Ask the coach what’s appropriate for both.

Fight shorts, T-shirts, and other apparel may be available as stock items or through custom team gear, depending on current availability.
If your coach confirms that a singlet and shorts suit your child’s needs, ask whether the team will place a custom order or open a team store. Check event rules before treating any setup as competition-ready for a specific tournament.
What can wait until later?
A few items may be useful once your child is attending regularly, but they aren’t automatic first-practice purchases.
- Headgear: Ask whether it’s required or recommended for practice or an upcoming event. Requirements can vary.
- Knee sleeves: Check with the coach if your child has a specific need; don’t assume they’re required.
- Gear bag: Helpful for keeping shoes and clean clothes together, but any suitable bag you already own may work at first.
- Warm-ups and extra apparel: Hoodies, joggers, and quarter zips can be useful off the mat or while traveling, but they’re extras, not first-practice essentials.
Bags, hoodies, joggers, and other apparel can often be included in a custom team order. In the meantime, any suitable bag you already own will do.

Bundles and team gear: options when the timing is right
If your coach recommends several items, a coordinated custom order can be a convenient way to outfit the team at once.
For a personalized singlet or coordinated team gear, MAT CLASH offers custom team gear and team stores. Custom team orders have a 15-item minimum; custom singlets start at $40 each. Ask your coach whether the team is arranging an order or store, and check size charts and event rules before the order is finalized.
Sizing and ordering: check before you click
Youth and adult sizes are available across the MAT CLASH selection, with sizes ranging from XS through 5XL depending on the item. Check the product’s current size chart before ordering; don’t assume a singlet, shorts, and T-shirt fit the same way.
Standard merchandise typically ships within 72 hours of purchase. Shipping transit time is additional, and delivery timing is not guaranteed. For custom team gear, allow a typical 3–4 weeks from manufacturing to delivery; actual timing can vary.
A simple plan for getting started
- Ask the coach what’s required for the first practice and the first competition.
- Bring workout clothes, wrestling shoes, and water to the MAT CLASH Training Center.
- Wait on the singlet and extras until you know what the team or event requires.
- Check the size chart and timing before placing an order.
Your child doesn’t need a perfect setup to begin. They need a chance to show up, learn, and take the next step.
MAT CLASH is the business that sells the gear; a store purchase is a commercial transaction, not a donation. Beginning November 1, 2026, MAT CLASH will contribute 50% of profits from gear orders to The On the Mat Foundation. No purchase or donation is required for a child to participate in the Training Center.
