We brought the candy. We brought the wrestling mat. And we brought a reason for families to stop, watch, and get to know the sport.
At Lakeview Middle School’s trunk or treat, The On The Mat Foundation joined the Halloween fun with athletes, volunteers, and a little piece of the wrestling room. Between the costumes and candy stops, families had a chance to see wrestling up close and meet the people helping make it accessible.
For us, that is what community outreach should do: give a child and a parent a comfortable place to ask, “What is wrestling all about?”
A wrestling mat belongs in the community, too
A school event can be an introduction that a practice flyer alone cannot offer. A family can watch a demonstration, talk with someone involved, and picture their own child giving wrestling a try. There is no need to understand a tournament bracket or know the name of a single move to start that conversation.
Our Lakeview photos capture that setting: a small black wrestling mat, a candy table, Halloween decorations, and families gathering nearby. Wrestling was part of the evening’s fun, right where people could see it.
We want more children to encounter the sport that way. Before there is a first match, there can be a friendly introduction. Before a family commits to a new activity, there can be someone available to explain the next step.
The people make the invitation real
Thank you to Lakeview Middle School for welcoming The On The Mat Foundation, and to the athletes and volunteers who helped us share the sport. Bringing the mat takes effort. So does making time to meet families, help at the table, and represent a team outside the practice room.
Those contributions matter. Young athletes have an opportunity to show younger children what being part of wrestling can look like. Volunteers help turn interest into a conversation. Families bring the questions that remind us how much there is to explain when someone is brand new.
We are grateful to everyone who stopped by, watched, asked questions, or spent a moment with us.
From a Halloween introduction to a place to train
The next step is the Mat Clash Training Center powered by The On The Mat Foundation. Training and registration are free, and beginners are welcome. Our goal is to make it easier for families to explore wrestling and find a consistent place to participate.
Practices are held at East Ridge High School, 4320 Bennett Road, Chattanooga, TN 37412. Visit our registration page for the current youth and middle/high school schedule.
A completed waiver and current AAU or USA Wrestling membership are required before participation; coaches will verify the membership needed for your session. Organization membership and event costs are separate from free Training Center registration. If costs or equipment are a barrier, reach out so we can discuss available support.

Help us make the next introduction possible
A community event is one opportunity to meet a child who might enjoy wrestling. Following through means having people, equipment, and training opportunities ready when that family wants to learn more.
You can be part of that work. Share registration with a parent. Ask about volunteering. Contact us about donating wrestling equipment or becoming a sponsor. Schools and community organizations can also reach out about opportunities to introduce their families to the sport.
We are working toward a dedicated, year-round home in the Chattanooga area. Along the way, we will keep showing up in the community and building the relationships that help this mission grow.
