JV did not begin his wrestling story as a champion. He began as a freshman with a skateboard, little understanding of the sport, and no reason for anyone to expect greatness.
Then he lost 48 straight matches.
For many wrestlers, one difficult season is enough to make them question whether they belong. Forty eight losses could have become proof that JV was not good enough. Instead, they became the beginning of his story.
Practice Monday
After every loss, Coach Cutter gave JV the same message: “Practice Monday.”
It was not a promise that the next match would be easier. It was a reminder that the next opportunity to improve was already waiting.
JV kept showing up. He practiced when confidence was low. He learned when progress was hard to see. He returned to the room before the results gave him a reason to believe.
Losing did not define him
A wrestling record shows what happened. It does not show who a wrestler can become.
JV’s early losses exposed the distance between where he was and where he wanted to be. Consistent work began closing that distance. Technique improved. Confidence followed. The wrestler who once seemed completely outmatched eventually became an All American and stood on the podium.

The goal is not to pretend losses do not hurt. The goal is to prevent a difficult result from becoming a permanent belief about who the wrestler is.
The Underdog
JV represents every wrestler who started behind, struggled publicly, and chose to return anyway. His story is not powerful because he eventually won. It is powerful because he kept working before winning gave him validation.
Losing does not define you unless you quit.
